Shawna Reardon, St.Anthony, NL
This week, we have the Reardon family with three cats that are all equally important to them. So our post looks a bit different than normally. But I am sure, you will enjoy reading about Lily, Rico and Yoshi! (All photos courtesy of Shawna Reardon)
Shawna writes: “Rico is the oldest male cat in our family. He is 15 years old and was adopted by us from the St. John’s SPCA in 1999. Rico is a male orange tabby. He’s a big cat with a big personality. Rico tries really hard to communicate with people, especially when he’s hungry.
His favorite food is definitely Shrimp. He actually eats them with his paw by hooking one out of his dish with his claw. When Rico was younger his favorite thing to do was catch paper balls in the air. He would jump and do a complete somersault while catching the paper. Unfortunately, his age is catching up on him and he can no longer do this.
Rico don’t like playing much with kids, especially now that he’s older. He just likes to be left alone to sleep. Since we first got Rico back in 1999, a lot has changed for him. He used to be the only pet in the house but now we have 2 more cats and 2 children, he has adapted well!
Yoshi is the second oldest feline in our family, but he’s still just a little kitty in my eyes, he’s only 5 years old. We adopted Yoshi back in 2008 from a family in St. Anthony. Yoshi was named by our oldest son after a Nintendo character. Yoshi is a gray and white cat with bright yellow eyes. He is very slender and a great hunter.
Yoshi is really quiet, he hardly ever meows. He follows our boys everywhere they go and he sleeps with them every night. He’s a very patient kitty and loves to receive lots of love. He’s definitely a licker; he loves to keep everyone clean.
Yoshi usually only eats cat food, he doesn’t like any cat treats. There are times when he’ll eat yogurt, puddings and Kraft Dinner. I have no idea why, but he loves Kraft Dinner. Rico gave him a hard time when we first brought him home, but now they are best buds.
Lily is the baby girl in our family. She’s a little white bobtail cat, with one blue eye and one green eye. Lily will be 2 this Easter. We actually named her Lily because we got her during Easter almost 2 years ago. It’s crazy how much she resembles a bunny, she even hops through grass.
Lily loves to cuddle, especially on her blanket that she likes to suck on. She is also very patient with our boys. Our youngest boy carries her around everywhere, and she doesn’t mind at all. Although Lily is small, she is a big eater. She will pretty much eat anything, especially Shrimp, just like her big brother Rico. During winter, Lily tends to blend into the snow quite well, so watch out birds.
Although we have three cats, they are all completely different with their own unique personalities. They are a big part of our family and have shown us much compassion and patience throughout the years. I can’t imagine our house without our three furry felines.
Rico is getting pretty old now and it’s going to be a sad day when we have to say good-bye to him, but for now, we are going to enjoy our time with him to the fullest.
My advice to other pet owners is to love your pet and treat it with the compassion it deserves. Pets adore their owners and rely on them for the littlest necessities. Be kind, gentle and understanding to your pet, their lives depend on it.”
