Interview of the week
…with Winnie Bussey from St. Lunaire-Griquet
Winnie, how did it come that you drove to Corner Brook in the middle of the night with your cocker spaniel Dan?
Yes, I left at 10.30 p.m. in St. Lunaire-Griquet and I arrived at Corner Brook at 4.30 in the morning.
Why?
It was three years ago. I came home from work, and my dog Dan who was 12 years old, was really glad to see me. I opened the door to my house and he rushed towards me and slipped. He fell over a 10-foot-patio. I tried to grab him but all I got was some of his fur.
What happened to him?
He was on the ground and could not get up and he was whining. I picked him up and brought him into the house. Then I called the vet clinic in Corner Brook.
What did they say?
They said I could bring my dog in during the night but there was an emergency charge.
It was late at night. What did you do?
I left with my dog, he was in his bed on the front seat of my car. It was a terrible night. It poured with rain, and I almost hit two moose. It took me 6 hours to get there.
How did you feel?
I was just in a panic to get there in time. I was afraid my dog would die before we got there. Dan was panting all the way.
What happened in Corner Brook?
I got there at 4.30 a.m. They kept him overnight in the clinic. Dan`s injuries were too severe that he could have lived a happy and normal life after that. I went to a hotel for 3 hours and was devastated.
These few hours must have been a nightmare. What did you do next?
In the morning, my three daughters and I made the difficult and painful decision to have Dan put to sleep. We did not want him to suffer any longer. It was heartbreaking.
Have you had another dog since?
No. But I have a Siamese cat named Kai who thinks he is a dog because he was raised with my dog Dan.
Thank you, Winnie, for this interview.
